At the age of eighteen,
Pierre Curie obtained his degree in physics.
He married then Marie Sklodowska in 1895.
|
|
Marie Curie led scientific research in
many fields. She was influenced by Henri
Becquerel’s discovery of radioactivity
in 1896. Her husband Pierre then joined
her on research into the radiation of
radioactive bodies. This led them to discover
radium and
polonium.
After the death of her husband, she
became the first woman professor of
physics to the Faculty of Science. But
she became ill due to repeated exposure
to radiation from radium during her
research, and this finally caused her
death.
Her dedication and self sacrifice led
to important medical and scientific
progress for mankind.
|
* Marie received two
Nobel Prizes: one for physics in
1903 that was shared with her husband
and Henri Becquerel, and one for chemistry
in 1911.
* Pierre is decorated with the "Davy
Medal of the Royal Society of London"
in 1903 and elected to the Academy
of Science in 1905. |
